# Content Repurposing and Distribution

Most content is published once and forgotten. A research report gets a launch post and a press release; a webinar is recorded and never watched again; a strong newsletter issue disappears after one send. Yet the expensive part (the research, the interview, the thinking) is already done. Repurposing turns one substantial piece into many formats for different channels and audiences, and distribution makes sure each version reaches people who will value it.

This skill plans repurposing and distribution: choosing pillar assets, mapping formats to channels, adapting rather than copying, scheduling over weeks and months, involving employees and partners, and measuring what each format adds.

## Operating principles
1. **Start with substance.** Repurpose pieces with original insight; reformatting thin content multiplies nothing.
2. **Adapt to each channel.** Native formats, lengths and hooks; never paste the same text everywhere.
3. **Spread over time.** Release derivatives over weeks and refresh yearly.
4. **Point back to the source.** Derivatives build awareness for the pillar asset where it helps.
5. **Measure each format.** Keep what works; drop what doesn't.

## Pillar to derivatives map
| Pillar asset | Derivatives |
|---|---|
| Research report | Press release, blog summary, charts for social, LinkedIn carousel, newsletter issue, webinar, sales one-pager, short video, podcast talking points, regional or segment cuts |
| Webinar or talk | Recording, short clips, transcript article, quote graphics, slides, Q&A post, newsletter recap |
| Long-form guide | Checklist PDF, email course, social thread, short videos per step, infographic, template |
| Podcast episode | Audio clips, video clips, show notes article, quote cards, newsletter segment |
| Customer case study | Short video, social post, sales slide, ad creative, quote for website |
| Executive essay | LinkedIn posts, newsletter issue, talk outline, bylined article pitch |

## Channel adaptation
| Channel | Format notes |
|---|---|
| LinkedIn | Short insight with a hook, carousel or native video; no link in first line if reach matters |
| X | Threads with one idea per post, charts |
| Instagram and TikTok | Vertical short video, captions, strong first seconds |
| YouTube | Longer explainers; Shorts for clips |
| Newsletter | Personal framing and one main takeaway |
| Blog | Summary or deep dive with internal links |
| Sales enablement | One-pagers and slides with the key numbers |
| Communities | Contribute insight to discussions, following community rules |

## When to use, and when not to
Use it after producing research, webinars, guides, podcasts or essays; when content output is high but reach is low; and when teams want more value from existing assets.

Don't use it to republish the same text across many sites (duplicate content without value) or to stretch weak content.

## Inputs to ask for, in one message
1. The pillar asset and its key insights.
2. Channels available and audience sizes.
3. Design and video capacity.
4. Employees, partners or communities that can share.
5. Past performance by format and channel.

## Workflow

### Step 1. Extract insights
List the five to ten strongest ideas, numbers, quotes and stories from the pillar asset.

### Step 2. Map derivatives
Choose formats per channel based on audience and capacity.

### Step 3. Adapt
Write channel-native hooks and formats; design visuals; cut clips.

### Step 4. Schedule
Launch week for core derivatives, then a drip over four to eight weeks; plan a yearly refresh.

### Step 5. Mobilise people
Give employees and partners ready-to-share posts and visuals; executives post in their own voice.

### Step 6. Distribute through owned, earned and paid
Newsletter and social, PR and communities, targeted paid promotion for the best pieces.

### Step 7. Measure
Reach, engagement, clicks to the pillar, leads and links by derivative and channel.

### Step 8. Learn and refresh
Double down on formats that work; update the pillar and re-release.

## Repurposing schedule (example)
| Week | Derivatives |
|---|---|
| 1 | Report launch, press outreach, newsletter, LinkedIn carousel, executive post |
| 2 | Chart series on social, blog summary, sales one-pager |
| 3 | Webinar on the findings |
| 4 | Webinar clips, quote cards, segment-specific posts |
| 6 to 8 | Guest articles, podcast appearances, community posts |
| 12 months | Updated edition |

## Insight extraction worksheet
```
| Insight | Type (number, quote, story, framework) | Best channels | Derivative ideas |
| Small firms spend 6 hours a week chasing invoices | Number | LinkedIn, press, newsletter | Chart, carousel slide, pitch hook |
| 'We stopped chasing and started automating' (customer) | Quote | Social, website, sales | Quote card, testimonial clip |
```

## Hooks by channel
| Channel | Hook example |
|---|---|
| LinkedIn | We surveyed 500 small business owners. One number surprised us. |
| Short video | Six hours a week. That's how long owners spend chasing invoices. |
| Newsletter | This week: what 500 business owners told us about late payments. |
| Sales email | The data your prospects will recognise from their own month-end. |

## Employee and partner sharing kit
- Three suggested posts in different tones that people can edit.
- Two or three visuals sized for each platform.
- The link to the pillar asset with tracking parameters.
- Key facts and what not to claim.
- A deadline and a thank-you with results afterwards.

## Measuring derivatives
| Metric | Why |
|---|---|
| Reach and engagement by format | What audiences respond to |
| Clicks to the pillar asset | Whether derivatives drive depth |
| Leads, sign-ups or downloads | Business value |
| Links and coverage | Earned reach |
| Cost per result for paid boosts | Efficiency |
Review after eight weeks and decide which formats to keep for the next pillar.

## Refresh cycle
Each year, update the pillar with new data or examples, re-release the best derivatives and retire formats that underperformed.

## Edge cases and judgement calls
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Small team | Pick three derivatives per pillar and do them well |
| Regulated content | Get derivatives approved together with the pillar |
| Republishing articles on other sites | Use canonical tags or summaries with links where possible |
| Employee advocacy concerns | Voluntary, with suggested posts they can edit |
| Paid promotion budget | Spend on derivatives already performing organically |

## Worked example
A B2B software company published an annual benchmark report that earned one launch spike and then faded. The new plan extracted eight key findings and created a press campaign, a LinkedIn carousel, a chart series over four weeks, a webinar with two customers, clips and quote cards, a sales one-pager, three guest articles and a newsletter series. Report downloads tripled compared with the previous year, coverage and links rose, and sales used the one-pager in many deals.

## Output format
```
# Repurposing plan: <pillar asset>, <date>
## Key insights extracted
## Derivatives by channel
## Schedule (launch, drip, refresh)
## People and partners sharing
## Paid amplification
## Metrics
```

## Common mistakes
- Pasting identical text on every channel.
- Repurposing weak content.
- Releasing everything on one day.
- Not pointing derivatives back to the source.
- No measurement by format.

## Questions to ask before you plan
- What are the strongest insights in this piece?
- Which channels does our audience actually use?
- Who can help distribute it?

## Self-check before you answer
- Is the pillar asset strong enough to repurpose?
- Is each derivative adapted to its channel?
- Is distribution spread over time?
- Are results measured by format and channel?
