# Mobile Conversion Optimisation

For many sites most visits now come from phones, yet mobile conversion rates often trail desktop by a wide margin. Some of the gap reflects behaviour (people research on phones and buy later on laptops), but much of it comes from fixable problems: slow pages, cramped layouts, tiny buttons, awkward forms, pop-ups covering content, missing wallet payments and checkout flows designed for a mouse. Closing even part of the gap is one of the largest opportunities in CRO.

This skill audits and improves mobile conversion: speed, layout, navigation, tap targets, forms, payments, pop-ups and cross-device journeys, with mobile-specific research and tests.

## Operating principles
1. **Test on real phones.** Desktop browser resizing hides many problems.
2. **Speed is a conversion feature.** Mobile users on variable networks feel every extra second.
3. **Thumbs, not cursors.** Tap targets, spacing and reachable buttons matter.
4. **Fewer keystrokes.** Autofill, wallets, address lookup and the right keyboards.
5. **Respect cross-device journeys.** Help people save, share or continue on another device.

## Common mobile problems
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Slow pages | Compress images, cut scripts, prioritise above-the-fold content, check Core Web Vitals field data |
| Content pushed below the fold | Shorter hero, smaller images, key information and call to action visible |
| Tiny tap targets | At least about 44 by 44 pixels with spacing |
| Hidden navigation | Clear menu, search and key links |
| Pop-ups covering content | Delay, shrink or remove on mobile |
| Awkward forms | Input types, autofill, fewer fields, large inputs |
| No wallet payments | Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and local options |
| Sticky elements covering content | Limit sticky bars; keep the call to action sticky only where it helps |
| Hard-to-read tables | Responsive tables or cards |
| Layout shifts | Reserve space for images, ads and banners |

## When to use, and when not to
Use it when mobile conversion lags desktop, when most traffic is mobile, after redesigns, before peak seasons and when mobile Core Web Vitals fail.

Don't use it for app store optimisation or native app onboarding in depth, or for technical performance work beyond conversion (the Technical SEO `core-web-vitals` skill).

## Inputs to ask for, in one message
1. Conversion rate and funnel by device, browser and operating system.
2. Core Web Vitals field data by template.
3. Mobile session recordings and heatmaps.
4. Payment methods offered.
5. Device and browser mix of visitors.
6. Any mobile-specific complaints in support or reviews.

## Workflow

### Step 1. Quantify the gap
Conversion and step completion by device; revenue per visitor by device; cross-device behaviour where measurable.

### Step 2. Test on real devices
Complete key journeys on popular iOS and Android phones over mobile data.

### Step 3. Check speed
Field data by template; largest contentful paint and interaction responsiveness; heavy scripts.

### Step 4. Review layout and navigation
First screen content, menu, search, tap targets, sticky elements.

### Step 5. Review forms and payments
Keyboards, autofill, address lookup, wallets, error handling.

### Step 6. Review interruptions
Pop-ups, cookie banners, chat widgets and app install prompts.

### Step 7. Support cross-device journeys
Save cart or wishlist, email a link, remember logged-in users.

### Step 8. Fix and test
Fix bugs and speed issues first; test layout and flow changes on mobile traffic.

## Mobile checklist
- Key message and call to action visible on the first screen.
- Tap targets large and spaced.
- Forms use correct input types and autofill.
- Wallet payments available at checkout.
- No pop-up covers content on arrival.
- Pages load quickly on mobile networks.
- Images and media sized for mobile.
- Sticky elements don't hide content.
- Search is easy to find on content-heavy sites.

## Device gap analysis
| Step | Desktop | Mobile | Gap | Likely cause to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Landing to product view | 62% | 48% | Large | Speed, first screen, navigation |
| Product view to add to cart | 9% | 6% | Medium | Images, sizing info, button placement |
| Cart to checkout | 55% | 41% | Large | Costs, sticky elements, account prompts |
| Checkout to purchase | 70% | 52% | Large | Forms, payments, errors |
Illustrative numbers; build the table from your analytics and investigate the largest gaps first.

## Real-device test script
1. Use a mid-range Android phone and a recent iPhone on mobile data, not office Wi-Fi.
2. Arrive from a search result and from a social link (in-app browser).
3. Find a product or plan, add it, check out or sign up as a new user.
4. Note load delays, mis-taps, hidden elements, keyboard problems and payment friction.
5. Record the screen so findings can be shared with designers and developers.

## In-app browsers
Visitors from social apps often land in in-app browsers that may block some cookies, wallets or saved passwords. Test journeys from the main social platforms you use, and offer an easy way to open the page in the phone's main browser when payment or login fails.

## Mobile metrics
| Metric | Why |
|---|---|
| Conversion and revenue per visitor by device | Size of the gap |
| Step completion by device | Where the gap opens |
| Core Web Vitals (mobile field data) | Speed and stability |
| Mis-tap and rage-click signals in recordings | Layout problems |
| Wallet payment share | Payment convenience |

## Cross-device support
Let visitors save a cart or wishlist, email themselves a link or log in to continue later. For lead generation, offer to send a summary or quote by email so people can finish on a laptop without starting again.

Re-test mobile journeys after every major release, because layout and script changes often break mobile first.

## Edge cases and judgement calls
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Research on mobile, purchase on desktop | Track cross-device where possible; add save and share features |
| App and mobile web both exist | Avoid aggressive app install prompts; serve users where they are |
| Emerging markets with low-end phones | Prioritise lightweight pages and data-friendly design |
| Long B2B forms | Offer "email me a link to finish later" |
| Mobile traffic mostly from social apps | Check in-app browsers, which may block cookies or payments |

## Worked example
An electronics retailer's mobile conversion was less than half its desktop rate. Real-device testing found a slow product page, filters hidden behind an unclear icon, a pop-up covering the add-to-cart button and no wallet payments. Fixes cut image weight and deferred non-essential scripts; tests moved filters into a clear button, delayed the pop-up and added Apple Pay and Google Pay. Mobile conversion rose substantially, narrowing the gap with desktop.

## Output format
```
# Mobile conversion review: <site>, <date>
## Device gap (conversion, revenue per visitor, funnel)
## Real-device findings
## Speed by template
## Layout, forms, payments and interruptions
## Fixes and tests
## Metrics
```

## Common mistakes
- Testing only in desktop browsers.
- Ignoring speed.
- Pop-ups and banners covering content.
- No wallet payments.
- Assuming the device gap is all behaviour.

## Questions to ask before you change mobile pages
- How big is the mobile gap at each step?
- What does the journey feel like on a mid-range phone on mobile data?
- Which payment methods do mobile customers expect?

## Self-check before you answer
- Was the journey tested on real devices?
- Are speed issues measured with field data?
- Are forms and payments mobile-friendly?
- Are interruptions controlled on mobile?
