# Local Search Engines: Baidu, Yandex, Naver and Seznam

Google dominates search in most countries, but not all. Baidu leads in mainland China, Yandex has long held the largest share in Russia, Naver competes closely with Google in South Korea, and Seznam keeps a meaningful share in the Czech Republic. Each has its own webmaster tools, ranking preferences, content ecosystems and rules. Treating them as "Google with a different logo" misses most of the opportunity. Shares change over time, so check current figures (for example on StatCounter) before planning. [Check current data]

This skill assesses whether local engines matter for a market, sets up their webmaster tools, adapts technical setup and content to each engine's preferences and builds presence in their own ecosystems.

## Operating principles
1. **Check whether the engine matters first.** Use current market share and your own analytics by referrer.
2. **Each engine has its own ecosystem.** Naver favours its own blogs, Cafés and Knowledge iN; Baidu favours its own properties such as Baijiahao and Baidu Baike.
3. **Technical basics still apply,** with engine-specific quirks (JavaScript rendering, speed from local servers, language and character sets).
4. **Legal and access rules matter.** China in particular involves hosting, licensing and content restrictions.
5. **Native expertise is essential.** Work with people who use these engines daily.

## Engine overview
| Engine | Main market | Webmaster tool | Notable traits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baidu | Mainland China | Baidu Search Resource Platform | Prefers Simplified Chinese, fast mainland hosting; ICP licence often needed for mainland hosting; own content properties rank well |
| Yandex | Russia and some CIS countries | Yandex Webmaster | Strong regional targeting settings; behavioural signals; Cyrillic content |
| Naver | South Korea | Naver Search Advisor | Blends results from its own services (blogs, Cafés, Knowledge iN, shopping); website results are one section among many |
| Seznam | Czech Republic | Seznam Webmaster | Czech-language content; local links and Firmy.cz listings |

## When to use, and when not to
Use it when entering China, Russia, South Korea or the Czech Republic, when analytics show traffic from these engines, and when local partners report weak visibility.

Don't use it where Google holds nearly all search share (use the other International SEO skills), or for paid search on these engines in depth.

## Inputs to ask for, in one message
1. Target markets and current traffic by search engine referrer.
2. Current hosting, CDN and domain for each market.
3. Content available in the local language.
4. Legal and business setup (local entity, licences).
5. Access to native speakers or local partners.

## Workflow

### Step 1. Confirm the opportunity
Current market share in each country and your referral data. Decide whether the engine justifies separate work.

### Step 2. Register webmaster tools
Verify the site in the engine's tools; submit sitemaps; check indexing and errors.

### Step 3. Adapt technical setup
Local or nearby hosting and CDN for speed; server-rendered content where JavaScript rendering is limited; correct character encoding; engine-specific meta tags where documented.

### Step 4. Localise for the engine's audience
Native content, local terms (researched in the engine's own keyword tools), local examples and trust signals.

### Step 5. Build ecosystem presence
Naver: a brand blog, presence in Cafés and Knowledge iN answers, shopping listings. Baidu: Baijiahao articles, Baike entries where eligible, Zhidao answers. Yandex: Yandex Business listings and regional settings. Seznam: Firmy.cz listing and Czech links.

### Step 6. Earn local links and mentions
From sites popular in that market rather than global ones.

### Step 7. Measure
Traffic by engine, indexing in each webmaster tool and rankings for local terms.

## China-specific checklist
- Mainland hosting or a China-capable CDN for acceptable speed.
- ICP filing or licence requirements for mainland hosting, handled by a local entity or partner.
- Google services (fonts, scripts, maps) blocked; replace them.
- Simplified Chinese content written for mainland audiences.
- Content compliant with local regulations.
- Baidu Search Resource Platform verification and submissions.

## Engine-specific technical notes
| Engine | Notes |
|---|---|
| Baidu | Simplified Chinese; fast mainland access matters; JavaScript rendering more limited than Google, so server-render key content; submit URLs through its platform |
| Yandex | Regional settings in Yandex Webmaster; Cyrillic content; Yandex Metrica for analytics |
| Naver | Submit sitemaps and RSS; site results compete with Naver's own blogs, Cafés and shopping |
| Seznam | Czech content; local business listing in Firmy.cz; Seznam Webmaster for indexing |

## Content ecosystems to plan for
| Engine | Owned or community properties that rank well |
|---|---|
| Baidu | Baijiahao articles, Baidu Baike entries, Zhidao answers, Tieba communities |
| Naver | Naver blogs, Naver Cafés, Knowledge iN answers, Naver Shopping, Naver Place |
| Yandex | Yandex Business listings, Yandex Zen-style content platforms (check current services) |
| Seznam | Firmy.cz listings, Czech news and comparison sites |
Services change over time, so confirm what each engine currently shows in results before planning.

## Measurement per engine
- Analytics referrals by engine and market.
- Indexing and query data in each engine's webmaster tool.
- Rankings for top local terms checked in the engine itself.
- Visibility of brand properties (blogs, listings) alongside the website.

## Working with local partners
Where native expertise is missing, brief a local agency or freelancer with clear goals, the keyword research, the brand's claims rules and reporting expectations. Ask for monthly data from the engine's own webmaster tools and examples of ecosystem content published, so progress can be checked rather than taken on trust. Keep ownership of accounts (webmaster tools, blogs, listings) in the company's name.

Revisit the plan every year, because engine market shares and services change, sometimes quickly.

Keep the website itself strong in every engine: it is the asset you fully control.

Report each engine separately.

## Edge cases and judgement calls
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Engine share falling | Keep basics in place; shift effort to Google if trends continue |
| No local entity in China | Consider Hong Kong hosting with lower performance, or a partner |
| Sanctions or legal restrictions | Get legal advice before investing in a market |
| Naver results dominated by its own services | Invest in Naver blogs and Cafés alongside the website |
| Limited budget | Prioritise the engine with the most revenue potential |

## Worked example
A Korean beauty brand's global English site ranked well on Google but barely appeared on Naver, where most of its domestic customers searched. Naver results for its category were dominated by blog reviews, Café discussions and shopping listings. The plan registered the site with Naver Search Advisor, launched an official Naver blog with product guides, seeded honest reviews with Korean beauty creators (disclosed), answered questions in Knowledge iN and listed products in Naver Shopping. Within a quarter the brand appeared in several Naver sections for its main product terms, and domestic sales from search grew.

## Output format
```
# Local search engine plan: <market>, <engine>, <date>
## Market share and current traffic
## Webmaster tools setup and indexing
## Technical adaptations
## Content and keyword localisation
## Ecosystem presence plan
## Links and measurement
```

## Common mistakes
- Assuming Google tactics transfer unchanged.
- Ignoring the engine's own content properties.
- Hosting far from the market, especially for China.
- No native speakers involved.
- Investing without checking current market share.

## Questions to ask before you plan
- How much search share does the engine have today in your market?
- Do you have local language content and native reviewers?
- What legal or hosting requirements apply?

## Self-check before you answer
- Did I confirm the engine matters with current data?
- Are webmaster tools set up and indexing checked?
- Is the engine's ecosystem part of the plan?
- Are legal and hosting requirements addressed?
