What marketing analytics and operations cover
Behind every effective marketing team is a measurement and operations engine: tracking that captures the right data, analysis that shows what’s working, systems that connect tools, and processes that keep campaigns running smoothly and legally. The skills in this map build and run that engine.
If you are new, start with marketing analytics. It teaches GA4, Tag Manager, dashboards, SQL and experimentation, which every other path here relies on. Then specialise in attribution and modelling, tracking, marketing or revenue operations, martech or privacy.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between marketing analytics and marketing operations?
Marketing analytics measures and explains performance: tracking, reporting, attribution and experiments. Marketing operations runs the systems and processes behind marketing: tools, data flows, automation, budgets and governance. The two work closely together. Many teams combine them under one leader, so knowing both helps.
Which path should I start with?
Start with marketing analytics, because it teaches the measurement fundamentals every other path needs. Choose attribution or media mix modelling for deeper measurement, tracking for technical implementation, or marketing operations and RevOps for systems and processes. Each path is free to start.
Do I need coding skills?
Not to start. GA4, Tag Manager and Looker Studio need no code. SQL becomes important quickly, and some specialisms such as tracking, analytics engineering and media mix modelling benefit from JavaScript, Python or R later on. Start with the tools, then add code as your questions get harder.
Is marketing analytics a good career?
Yes. Every marketing team needs people who can prove what works and run reliable systems. Analytics and operations roles are well paid, in demand across industries and lead to senior roles in growth, data and marketing leadership. Skills also transfer into data, product and finance roles.
How is privacy changing marketing measurement?
Consent rules, browser restrictions and the decline of third-party cookies mean less tracking data. Teams are responding with consent-aware tracking, server-side tagging, first-party data, experiments and media mix models that rely less on tracking individual users. People who understand both privacy and measurement are increasingly valued.
