What is account-based marketing (ABM)?

Traditional B2B marketing casts a wide net and passes leads to sales. Account-based marketing flips the funnel: marketing and sales agree first on which companies matter most, then work together to win them. Instead of chasing individual leads, an ABM team engages the whole buying group inside each account, often six to ten people with different priorities.

ABM usually runs at three levels. One-to-one programmes give a handful of strategic accounts fully tailored attention. One-to-few programmes group similar accounts by industry or need. One-to-many programmes use technology to reach hundreds of accounts with lighter personalisation. Some teams now call the wider approach ABX, account-based experience, to stress that it covers the whole customer journey, not just marketing.

  4. 4ConvertMarketing and sales work each account together into qualified opportunities.

ABM tools to learn

Is account-based marketing a good career?

Yes, especially in companies selling high-value deals to businesses. ABM roles combine strategy, data and close work with sales, and people who can show pipeline and revenue from target accounts are valued in software, fintech, professional services and enterprise technology.

Close to revenue

ABM is measured in pipeline and closed deals from named accounts, which gives the role real influence with sales and leadership.

Strategic work

You decide where the company focuses, which makes ABM more strategic than most campaign roles.

Broad skill set

You use research, positioning, content, paid media, events and data, so you build a wide and transferable toolkit.

Room to grow

ABM leads often move into heads of demand generation, revenue marketing or marketing leadership.

How to get an ABM job

ABM hiring managers look for B2B judgement: can you choose the right accounts, work with sales and show pipeline impact? A portfolio with an account plan, buying group maps and one pilot result is strong evidence, especially alongside HubSpot’s free ABM certification.

Job-ready checklist

  • You can build a tiered target account list from fit and intent signals
  • You can map buying groups and tailor messages by role
  • You can run account-targeted LinkedIn campaigns
  • You can design coordinated plays with sales
  • You can measure ABM with account engagement, pipeline and revenue
  • You have at least one ABM project you can talk through in detail

Portfolio pieces that get interviews

Account-based marketing interview questions

How would you build a target account list?

A strong answer covers: Start from the ideal customer profile and closed-won data, add intent and engagement signals, and agree the list with sales. Tier accounts by fit and value, and review the list regularly. Mention data quality and how you'd handle disagreements with sales.

How do you measure ABM success?

A strong answer covers: Account engagement and meetings as leading indicators, then pipeline, win rate, deal size and sales cycle for target accounts compared with similar non-target accounts. Avoid lead counts as the main measure.

Sales isn't following up on account signals. What do you do?

A strong answer covers: Find out why: unclear signals, wrong timing, poor context or capacity. Agree rules of engagement, give reps useful context with each signal, start with a few willing reps and show results before scaling.

When would you not recommend ABM?

A strong answer covers: When deal values are low, the market is large and undefined, or sales and marketing can't commit to working together. Broad demand generation is usually better in those cases.

How would you run ABM for 500 accounts with a small team?

A strong answer covers: Use one-to-many plays: industry-level messaging, account-targeted ads, intent-triggered outreach and automation, while reserving deeper personalisation for a small tier 1 list.

Account-based marketing FAQs

What is account-based marketing in simple terms?

It's B2B marketing aimed at a specific list of companies instead of everyone. Marketing and sales choose the accounts together, learn who is involved in buying at each one, and reach those people with coordinated, personalised ads, content, events and outreach until they become customers.

What's the difference between ABM and demand generation?

Demand generation builds interest across a whole market and captures the buyers who respond. ABM starts from a named list of target companies and focuses effort on them. Many B2B teams run both: demand generation for the broad market and ABM for their most valuable accounts.

What is ABX?

ABX, or account-based experience, is a newer term for ABM that covers the whole customer journey, including sales and customer success, not just marketing. It stresses using data about each account to deliver the right experience at every stage, before and after the sale.

Do I need expensive software for ABM?

No. You can start ABM with a CRM, LinkedIn's company targeting, a spreadsheet of target accounts and close work with sales. Platforms such as Demandbase or 6sense add intent data and automation at scale, but many teams prove ABM works before buying them.

How long does ABM take to show results?

Engagement can change within weeks, but pipeline and revenue follow the sales cycle, which in B2B is often three to twelve months. Set expectations for leading indicators early and measure revenue over at least two or three quarters. Compare target accounts with similar non-target accounts throughout.

Can I learn ABM for free?

Yes. HubSpot's ABM course, Apollo Academy and Clay University are free, and the videos, playbooks and blogs on this page cover every stage. Practising is easiest inside a real B2B company, so use your employer or a client project if you can.
