ChatGPT Search Visibility SKILL.md

The ChatGPT Search Visibility skill makes Claude, Codex or another AI agent find out why ChatGPT does or doesn’t mention a brand, and fix it. It verifies OpenAI’s three crawlers by IP, tests answers with search on and off, separates search-grounded answers from model knowledge, uses Bing indexing as a baseline and tracks ChatGPT referrals in GA4.

chatgpt-search-visibility/SKILL.md, version 1.0.0, 1,179 words.

ChatGPT answers many questions from what the model already knows, and searches the web when a question needs current or specific information. When it searches, it retrieves pages, writes an answer and shows source links. Being in those links depends on three things you control: whether OpenAI's search crawler can reach you, whether your pages are strong results for the searches ChatGPT runs, and whether the web says consistent, positive things about you.

This skill audits and improves how a brand appears in ChatGPT, for both search-grounded answers and the model's background knowledge.

OpenAI publishes IP ranges for each (gptbot.json, searchbot.json, chatgpt-user.json), so requests can be verified. Allowing OAI-SearchBot while blocking GPTBot is a valid choice for search visibility without training use.

Operating principles

  1. Access first. Check robots.txt, CDN and WAF rules and logs for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User.
  2. Rank for the sub-queries. ChatGPT rewrites prompts into searches; pages that answer those searches well get retrieved.
  3. Be consistent across the web. Model knowledge comes from many sources; contradictions produce wrong or hedged answers.
  4. Measure referrals. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many outbound links; combine with referrer data.
  5. No manipulation. Planted reviews, fake Reddit posts and self-ranking lists create long-term risk.

When to use, and when not to

Use it when ChatGPT doesn't mention you for category questions, describes you wrongly, cites competitors' pages for your own brand questions, or when ChatGPT referrals matter to revenue.

Don't use it for Google's AI features (ai-overviews-ai-mode) or other engines (answer-engine-platforms). For product listings and checkout in ChatGPT, see ai-commerce-product-visibility.

Inputs to ask for, in one message

  1. robots.txt, CDN bot settings and 30 days of logs.
  2. Prompts buyers ask, by market.
  3. GA4 data for chatgpt.com referrals and utm_source=chatgpt.com landings.
  4. Bing Webmaster Tools access.
  5. Key brand facts (pricing, products, regulation, founders) and known errors.

# ChatGPT Search Visibility

ChatGPT answers many questions from what the model already knows, and searches the web when a question needs current or specific information. When it searches, it retrieves pages, writes an answer and shows source links. Being in those links depends on three things you control: whether OpenAI's search crawler can reach you, whether your pages are strong results for the searches ChatGPT runs, and whether the web says consistent, positive things about you.

This skill audits and improves how a brand appears in ChatGPT, for both search-grounded answers and the model's background knowledge.

## OpenAI's crawlers
| User agent | Purpose | robots.txt | If blocked |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Finds and indexes pages for ChatGPT search | Respected | OpenAI states opted-out sites won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers [Confirmed] |
| ChatGPT-User | Fetches a page when a user's request needs it (for example a pasted link) | May not apply, because a person triggered it [Confirmed] | Users who ask about your page may get nothing |
| GPTBot | Collects content that may be used to train OpenAI models | Respected | Affects future model knowledge, not ChatGPT search |

OpenAI publishes IP ranges for each (gptbot.json, searchbot.json, chatgpt-user.json), so requests can be verified. Allowing OAI-SearchBot while blocking GPTBot is a valid choice for search visibility without training use.

## Two ways into an answer
| Route | What matters | How fast it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Search-grounded answer | Crawl access, indexation in OpenAI's and partner indexes, ranking for the searches ChatGPT runs, clear passages | Days to weeks |
| Model knowledge | What the web consistently said about you before the training cut-off | Months, with new models |

Which third-party search providers ChatGPT uses alongside its own index isn't fully public; Bing has been widely observed as one source. [Consensus] Strong Bing indexing is therefore a sensible baseline.

## Operating principles
1. **Access first.** Check robots.txt, CDN and WAF rules and logs for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User.
2. **Rank for the sub-queries.** ChatGPT rewrites prompts into searches; pages that answer those searches well get retrieved.
3. **Be consistent across the web.** Model knowledge comes from many sources; contradictions produce wrong or hedged answers.
4. **Measure referrals.** ChatGPT adds `utm_source=chatgpt.com` to many outbound links; combine with referrer data.
5. **No manipulation.** Planted reviews, fake Reddit posts and self-ranking lists create long-term risk.

## When to use, and when not to
Use it when ChatGPT doesn't mention you for category questions, describes you wrongly, cites competitors' pages for your own brand questions, or when ChatGPT referrals matter to revenue.

Don't use it for Google's AI features (`ai-overviews-ai-mode`) or other engines (`answer-engine-platforms`). For product listings and checkout in ChatGPT, see `ai-commerce-product-visibility`.

## Inputs to ask for, in one message
1. robots.txt, CDN bot settings and 30 days of logs.
2. Prompts buyers ask, by market.
3. GA4 data for chatgpt.com referrals and `utm_source=chatgpt.com` landings.
4. Bing Webmaster Tools access.
5. Key brand facts (pricing, products, regulation, founders) and known errors.

## Workflow

### Step 1. Verify access
Confirm OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User reach important pages with 200 responses. Verify by IP against OpenAI's published ranges. Fix challenges and blocks at the CDN.

### Step 2. Check indexing proxies
Check Bing indexing for key pages and submit sitemaps and IndexNow. Ask ChatGPT, with search on, to find a specific recent page by title; if it can't, retrieval is the issue.

### Step 3. Run the prompt set
With search on, in fresh sessions, record mentions, cited URLs, descriptions and competitors. Also run brand questions with search off to see model knowledge.

### Step 4. Diagnose
| Symptom | Likely cause | Skill |
|---|---|---|
| Never cited, site not fetched | Crawler blocked or challenged | `ai-crawler-access` |
| Fetched but not cited | Pages weak for the searches ChatGPT runs | `answer-ready-content`, `query-fan-out-mapping` |
| Mentioned with wrong facts | Outdated pages or third-party profiles | `brand-accuracy-ai-answers` |
| Missing from "best X" lists | Few independent mentions | `ai-citation-earning` |
| Unknown with search off | Weak entity presence before the training cut-off | `entity-optimisation` |

### Step 5. Improve the pages ChatGPT should cite
For brand facts: an authoritative, current page per fact type (pricing, features, security, about). For category questions: comparison pages with honest tables and sourced data.

### Step 6. Track
Add ChatGPT to the monthly tracking with referral sessions and conversions.

## Worked example
A UK fintech found ChatGPT recommended three competitors for "best business account for freelancers" and described its own fees using 2024 figures. Logs showed OAI-SearchBot receiving 403s from a WAF rule added during a bot attack. After allowing verified OpenAI IPs, updating the fee page with a dated table, correcting fees on two comparison sites and contributing data to a trade publication's annual review, the brand appeared in ChatGPT answers for 6 of 12 tracked category prompts within two months, with current fees.

## Output format
```
# ChatGPT visibility review: <brand>, <date>
## Access (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot status, verified by IP)
## Prompt results (search on and off): mentions, citations, accuracy, competitors
## Diagnosis table
## Actions with skills, owners and re-check dates
## Referral tracking setup and baseline
```

## Testing ChatGPT properly
| Setting | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Search on and off | Separates search-grounded answers from model knowledge |
| Fresh chat, memory off or logged out | Removes personal history |
| Location | Answers and sources vary by country |
| Repeat runs | Answers vary; record ranges |
| Record cited links | Shows which pages to improve or correct |

## OpenAI crawler policy examples
```
# Allow ChatGPT search and user-requested fetches; block training
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
```
Check OpenAI's current crawler documentation before publishing, then confirm in CDN rules and logs that OAI-SearchBot receives 200 responses.

Re-test priority prompts monthly and after any crawler or site change.

## Edge cases and judgement calls
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT knows the brand without search but with old facts | Strengthen current sources; model knowledge updates only with new models |
| ChatGPT cites a reseller instead of you | Make your official page the clearest source; check reseller pages for accuracy |
| Legal or editorial team wants no training use | Block GPTBot, keep OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User allowed |
| Logs show ChatGPT-User but never OAI-SearchBot | Search crawler blocked or not yet discovering; check edge rules and Bing indexing |
| Many referrals land on one old page | Update or redirect it; it's what ChatGPT trusts for that topic |

When to use this skill, and when not to

Use it when ChatGPT recommends competitors but not you, describes your brand with old facts, cites someone else’s page for your own brand questions, or when ChatGPT referrals matter to revenue.

OpenAI runs three separate crawlers. OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search, and OpenAI states that sites opted out of it won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers. ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a person asks, and robots.txt may not apply to it. GPTBot collects training data. Blocking the wrong one is one of the most common reasons brands disappear from ChatGPT.

Don’t use it for Google’s AI features (use AI Overviews and AI Mode) or product checkout in ChatGPT (use AI Commerce).

Example prompts

  • “Why does ChatGPT recommend three competitors and never us?”
  • “Check whether OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User can reach our site. Logs attached.”
  • “ChatGPT quotes our old fees. Find the source.”
  • “We want ChatGPT search visibility but no training use. Set the rules.”
  • “How much revenue comes from ChatGPT? Set up the tracking.”

Example output

The skill returns a fixed structure. A shortened example for an imaginary site:

# ChatGPT visibility review: example.com, 10 October 2026

## Access
| Crawler | robots.txt | Edge | Logs (30 days) | Verified IPs |
| OAI-SearchBot | Allowed | WAF 403 | 0 successful | n/a |
| ChatGPT-User | Allowed | OK | 214 hits, 200 | Yes |
| GPTBot | Blocked (policy) | n/a | 0 | n/a |

## Prompt results (12 category prompts, search on)
Mentioned 0/12. Brand prompts: fees quoted from 2024 comparison article.

## Diagnosis
WAF rule blocks OAI-SearchBot; outdated fee table on a comparison site.

Access is checked in robots.txt, at the edge and in logs, because a crawler allowed in one place can still be blocked in another.

What the agent needs from you

The skill asks for robots.txt, CDN bot settings and 30 days of logs, the prompts buyers ask by market, GA4 data for chatgpt.com referrals and utm_source=chatgpt.com landings, Bing Webmaster Tools access and the key brand facts with any known errors.

How this skill hands off to related skills

ChatGPT fixes span several skills. Blocked crawlers go to AI Crawler Access, weak pages to Answer-Ready Content, wrong facts to Brand Accuracy, missing “best X” mentions to Earning Citations and weak model knowledge to Entity Optimisation. Bing foundations are covered in Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Gemini.

How to run the ChatGPT Search Visibility skill step by step

  1. Install the skill as chatgpt-search-visibility/SKILL.md.
  2. Share robots.txt, CDN bot settings and 30 days of logs so OpenAI’s three crawlers can be checked.
  3. List the prompts buyers ask, by market, including brand fact prompts.
  4. Add GA4 data for chatgpt.com referrals and landings with utm_source=chatgpt.com.
  5. Run prompts with search on and off, in fresh sessions, and review the diagnosis table.
  6. Fix the diagnosed causes and add ChatGPT to monthly tracking.

Situations this skill handles

Brands go missing from ChatGPT for a few repeatable reasons. The skill handles these situations:

SituationWhat the skill does
Never fetched or citedChecks OAI-SearchBot access at robots.txt, CDN and logs
Fetched but not citedImproves pages for the searches ChatGPT runs
Old facts in answersTraces them to outdated pages or profiles
Missing from “best X” listsPlans independent mentions on cited sources
Unknown with search offStrengthens entity presence for future model knowledge
Wants no training useBlocks GPTBot while keeping OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User allowed

What makes this skill different

Most “ChatGPT SEO” advice treats ChatGPT as one system. This skill separates search-grounded answers from model knowledge, and OpenAI’s three crawlers from each other: OAI-SearchBot for search, ChatGPT-User for user requests and GPTBot for training. Blocking the wrong one is one of the most common reasons brands disappear.

It verifies crawlers by IP against OpenAI’s published ranges, tests answers properly and ties every recommendation to a diagnosed cause.

Practical tips from real projects

  • Blocking GPTBot doesn’t remove you from ChatGPT search; blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
  • Test in fresh sessions with memory off, from the target country.
  • Strong Bing indexing is a sensible baseline; Bing has been widely observed as one of ChatGPT search’s sources.
  • No paid route exists into organic answers.

A worked example: a UK fintech found ChatGPT recommending three competitors for business accounts for freelancers and quoting its fees from 2024. Logs showed OAI-SearchBot receiving 403s from a WAF rule added during a bot attack. After allowing verified OpenAI IPs, updating the fee page with a dated table, correcting two comparison sites and contributing data to a trade publication, the brand appeared in 6 of 12 tracked prompts within two months, with current fees.

Referral tracking completes the picture: a GA4 channel for AI assistants, plus landing URLs tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com, shows whether visibility turns into sessions and conversions.

Model knowledge is the slow lane. When ChatGPT answers without searching, it relies on what the web consistently said about you before its training cut-off. Consistent facts across your site, profiles and independent coverage are what improve those answers over time, which is why the skill pairs with entity optimisation and citation earning rather than treating ChatGPT in isolation.

Frequently asked questions

Allow OAI-SearchBot, make sure your pages are strong results for the searches ChatGPT runs, keep facts consistent across the web and earn independent mentions. There is no submission form or paid route into organic answers.

GPTBot collects content that may train OpenAI models. OAI-SearchBot indexes pages for ChatGPT search. Blocking GPTBot doesn’t remove you from ChatGPT search; blocking OAI-SearchBot does.

ChatGPT search uses OpenAI’s own crawler and third-party search providers. Bing has been widely observed as one of them, so good Bing indexing is a sensible baseline.

Usually because outdated pages or profiles say so, or because it answered from model knowledge without searching. Fix the sources and test with search on.

Use a GA4 channel group for AI referrers and watch landing URLs with utm_source=chatgpt.com. Some ChatGPT clicks arrive without a referrer, so totals undercount.

Not in organic answers. Be cautious with services that promise placement.
