Customer onboarding and activation strategist

I design the journeys that move a new sign-up to their first key action as fast as possible. At Formplus, an onboarding redesign lifted activation by 63% in two quarters.

What I do

01

Defining activation

I find the first key action that predicts a customer staying, such as a first deposit or a first purchase, and make it the goal every onboarding message works towards.

02

Journey design

I build the welcome, checklist and nudge sequence across email, push, in-app, SMS and WhatsApp, with entry rules, exit rules and a goal event for each step.

03

Friction removal

I look for where new customers stall before the key action and fix the cause, whether it is a form, an empty screen or a missing reminder, before adding more messages.

04

Attribution to activation

At Ecobank I built a customer attribution pipeline from acquisition to activation that reduced drop-offs by 18%, so every channel could be judged on activated customers, not sign-ups.

How I work

  1. 1

    Find the key action

Identify the first behaviour that separates customers who stay from those who leave.

  2. 2

    Map the path

Chart every step from sign-up to that action and the rate of loss at each step.

  3. 3

    Remove friction

Fix forms, screens and requirements that stall people before messaging them.

  4. 4

    Build the journey

Write the welcome, nudge and reminder flow, with exit rules once the action happens.

  5. 5

    Test and measure

Change one thing at a time and report activation, not opens.

Who I help

Fintech and app businesses where the first transaction decides customer value.

SaaS and product teams where sign-ups grow but few reach first value.

Subscription brands that lose customers in the first weeks.

Teams with several segments who need a different first week for each.

Questions

What is customer activation?

Activation is the moment a new customer first gets real value, usually by completing one key action such as funding an account or making a first purchase. It is different from sign-up. A customer who registers and never acts has not activated, and rarely becomes a retained customer.

What is the difference between onboarding and activation?

Onboarding is the set of steps and messages that guide a new customer. Activation is the result you want from them: the key action. I design onboarding backwards from activation, so every email, push or in-app prompt moves the customer towards that one action.

How do you find the key activation action?

By comparing customers who stayed with those who left and looking for the earliest behaviour that separates them. It needs real product data, not a guess. Once it is clear, onboarding, reporting and attribution all use the same definition of an activated customer.

Which channels work best for onboarding?

It depends on where your customers already are and what they have consented to. At Ecobank I used SMS and WhatsApp journeys for new customers. For a product people open daily, in-app messages and email may do more. I choose by consent, speed and cost, and test.

How do you measure an onboarding journey?

By the share of new customers who reach the key action, and how quickly, compared with customers who did not receive the journey. Opens and clicks are supporting signals. At Formplus the result I reported was a 63% rise in new-customer activation within two quarters.
