Customer acquisition strategist

I decide which channels earn their place, in what order and at what cost, then build the system that brings customers in. At Eden Life, cost per lead stayed under $3.

What I do

01

Channel mix and order

I build a channel mix across organic, paid, partnerships and referral, and add channels in order of proven return. At Formplus, organic grew from under 5% to 57% of new sign-ups in two years, alongside paid search, display and social at about $50k a quarter.

02

Cost targets before spend

I set what a customer or lead may cost before money moves, tied to payback. At Eden Life I owned the yearly and quarterly OKRs and reporting for the performance marketing team, and cost per lead stayed below $3.

03

Organic search as an acquisition channel

Search brings in people who are already looking. Topship's 436 route pages reached people searching for the exact journey they needed, and at JerseyGram organic search came back after a Google penalty to account for 51% of all sales.

04

Measuring acquisition by channel

A channel is only as good as its measurement. At Ecobank I built a customer attribution pipeline that reduced funnel drop-offs by 18% and improved how acquisition was measured by channel.

How I work

  1. 1

    Set the target

Agree what a customer is worth, what one may cost and how long payback can take.

  2. 2

    Pick the first channels

Start with the channels closest to existing demand, and add others only once the first ones return.

  3. 3

    Fix measurement first

Check tracking and attribution before spend, so every test produces data the team can trust.

  4. 4

    Run channel tests

Test audiences, offers and pages in small, time-boxed batches, each with a clear pass mark.

  5. 5

    Reallocate by return

Move budget and effort towards what brings in customers who activate, and stop what does not.

Questions

What is a customer acquisition strategy?

It is the plan for which channels bring in customers, in what order, at what cost and with what payback. A good one names the target customer, sets a cost ceiling per customer or lead, and says which channel gets budget first. It ends with a review rule that moves effort towards what works.

Which acquisition channel should a startup start with?

The one closest to existing demand. If people already search for the problem, start with search and templated pages. If they do not, paid social can create demand but costs more. At Formplus, organic grew from under 5% to 57% of new sign-ups in two years, alongside paid search, display and social at about $50k a quarter.

How do you keep cost per lead down?

Set the ceiling first, then test audiences, offers and landing pages in small batches. At Eden Life, acquisition across Google, Meta, Instagram and events ran at a cost per lead below $3. I report cost per lead next to what happens after the lead, so cheap leads that never convert do not pass as wins.

How does SEO fit with paid acquisition?

Paid gives fast tests and search gives compounding returns. I use paid to learn which queries and offers convert, then build pages for them. At Topship, 436 route pages made product-led SEO the source of 56% of sign-ups. Both channels share one tracking set-up, so their results can be compared fairly.

How do you measure which channel brings in customers?

By following customers past the click to activation. At Ecobank I built a customer attribution pipeline that reduced funnel drop-offs by 18% and improved how acquisition was measured by channel. I check tracking before spend starts and compare channels on activated customers, not sign-ups alone.
